Smile (100 Theme Challenge)
I smiled. It’s not that I had anything to be happy about, but it was to hide who I truly was from everyone else. It was my mask, if you will.
Even when I was little, growing up in the Rukongai, I smiled. Life was hard, food was scarce and I was always so hungry. I had to steal food to survive.
And then I met her. She was semi-conscious at the time, badly dehydrated and starved. She was like me. Something about her really connected. I gave her some of the persimmons I had and that’s how we started our friendship. Only when I was with her was my smile ever real.
Years later when I had to betray her, the smile became my mask
